Beyond the Boundary (Kyoukai no Kanata) Watch Order Guide

The idea of combining Japanese folklore of yokai and monsters with a modern setting and the element of teenagers with superpowers fighting them isn’t new. Beyond the Boundary is an attempt at this concept by KyoAni with a hybrid fantasy/romance story. One that, despite some initial promise, fails to deliver. Although the action scenes are plentiful enough, the poor characterization and execution of the concept stretch the series into mediocrity from the get-go.

However, with gorgeous art and intense fight scenes as expected of KyoAni, the series provides a great visual experience for those who like a lot of action and a serene atmosphere. Beyond the Boundary balances light comedy with some seriousness in the later episodes. While it doesn’t reach the levels of necessity like some other series you may have seen, it offers more than ample entertainment value with a few well-executed concepts. Just don’t take the plot too seriously.
